The Studio…

This isn’t about becoming an artist

This is about creativity in ordinary life, making space, even small amounts to create.

We spend enormous amount of time scrolling, consuming digital media, responding, watching our screens.

Making something asks us for something else. In fact, it demands we slow down, pay attention… demands isn’t the right word either, It naturally slows us down, increases our ability to pay attention.

It uses our hands, it uses our imagination, our brains start to focus and think differently, less stimulation, and more relaxation. And we make something, something that never existed before. Importantly, that something doesn’t have to be good, perfect, even finished.

A Creative’s Studio came about out of my need to work my way back from what was suspiciously familiar to total burnout (I had been close before).

Except it wasn’t actually occupationally related, it was everything, and I was becoming more and more exhausted, yet I wasn’t doing much, more and more disconnected , yet I was with people all the time, even people I loved, more and more panicky and feeling continually on and hounded, yet I had hours of quiet time.

I took leave from my job, and I wondered if I’d ever go back..

And one day I grabbed a pen and scribbled on the wall… not words, just marks, scribble… and i started to look closely at those marks, and for a few seconds, that felt like minutes, I was only looking at what was in front of me. Thick and thin, long and short, just marks. Oh my goodness scribbling FELT good!

I realised I hadn’t made anything in ages, and I mean anything.. I used to knit, crochet, take photos, draw, sew… and I couldn’t remember the last time any of that was part of my daily life.

And so I started to get back to it, in all kinds of small moments, sometimes big ones, sometimes 2 minutes over coffee. All kinds of materials, things I had at home I’d forgotten about, things I found in the garden, under the couch (true!), in drawers. And the more I made the more I could feel the space coming back to my mind, my brain, my emotional and mental energy start to return… and the more I made, the more I wanted to explore and make.

And A Creative’s Studio grows out of all of that.. explore the Studio, explore your creativity through the Studio… make something.. make more…

A Creative’s Studio Philosophy…

The finished object isn’t the point…

Make for the process

Forget perfection…

Wonky, unfinished and imperfect are all welcome and expected

Make without a purpose..

Not everything needs to be a product

Use what you have…

Creativity doesn’t require expensive materials

Step away from the screen…

Sometimes the best creative tool is a non-digital one

Make more often…

Small acts often are what make something part of daily life

Making can change the way a day feels…

When we make something, our attention is directed directly onto what is in front of us.

A pencil. Some clay, A ball of wall, scraps of paper.

The act of making can create moments of calm, curiosity, and absorption.

These are the moments A Creative’s Studio is interested in, and in helping you touch base with them.
